I just bought 2 e30s both all wheel drives. 1 has a blown motor and i was thinking about dropping an S50 from an e36 into it.. Is it possible? If yes then what would i need to buy and how much would it cost? Or if there are any other threds that have done it more and could explain it in detail
Thanks in advance.

But is it the exact same thing when it comes to my E30 being awd?

not exactly. the awd requires some extra work. Its quite a bit more expensive than doing a rwd e30. check out this thread. looks like you have to have a custom made oil pan. http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21774

Absolutely anything IS possible. Only question is how, and how much!!!
I don't think anyone can give you a clear amount, and even if they do, not sure if you can get it done for the same. When it comes to hard to find parts and custom fabrication, no two jobs are the same. Might have more luck with a Turbo build on the AWD...

The only M5x motor with AWD was the E34 525ix, which was only sold in Europe. You can swap lot of those parts to make it work, and you'd basically wind up with the E34 AWD system, which is, in many ways, not as good as the E30 ix.

You can also use your existing transmission, TC, etc and make a frankenstein oil pan. Welding cast aluminum is difficult.

Either way, this is difficult and expensive.

I saw those for sale, the pair in the SW, right?

If you would be willing to sell one of the ix drivetrains, I would definitely take one of them off your hands.

For the sake of the hassle, I'd just rebuild the M20.

all you have to ask yourself is....why?

A turbo iX will make tons more power than an m50/s50 swap.

you dont have to use the e34 awd system. afaik you have to cut the m50 ix oilpan and weld it together with the s50 one. midnight autoworks (sp?) in the states have a grey one.

the guy who bought my iX wanted to do this but ended up rebuilding the m20 and boosting it due to practicality.

the e30 ix transfer case will not hold the torq of the S50.

There is a guy on bcbimmers.com named Matt who tried this project out. I dont think he succeeded in getting it to work.

you can get 250hp 260tq out of a bolt on turbo'd M20 and from there you may get away with not blowing the xfer case.

xfer case won't blow due to that. It can handle a lot more power/torque. The front diff will explode first.
The xfer case will give up if not maintained properly or if it's already seen some damage.
There are a lot of turbo ix's out there above 300-400 that are not blowing xfer cases(chains or VCs) - look to europe.

But on that note, make sure your TC(VC) is in good condition before you throw more power at it then blame your TC for being the weak link.

problem is with most IX's that if they have been towed once in their life dragging the back wheels, the xfer case is pooched.
