1996 or 1997 328is (2 or the 328i 4 door version) should be in the price range you're looking for. Very nice engine, underrated by BMW in order to make their US (96-99) M3 appear more competitive and if the mod bug hits you, you can easily get it up to 250-260 hp naturally aspirated with cams, manifold, exhaust and software. Stock is 189. Get one with a body thats in good shape, no rust, no signs of painting or frame damage/accident rebuild and you'll be set.

They are very reliable and have plently of power for their age.

98 and up have the dual vanos which makes them more difficult to upgrade in the future.

like a 2001-2003 civic you can get, real good on gas, reliable as anything, I doubt it's much fun to drive though being FWD and not much horsepower

Depends what you want, are you hardcore into cars and will be doing a lot of modifying? Or do you just want a nice base car for the full ammount.

With 12 grand to spend I wouldnt get anything newer than an e30 or e34. About 4-5 grand for the right car. The rest 7 grand for restoration and modifying. (kit, strip + paint, engine rebuild/swap, suspension, wheels/tires). The 7 grand might not be enough to cover all of that, but it would be a good start no doubt.

On the other hand if you aren't into modifying or into the classic look, then buy something newer for the full amount, and do whatever you can afford as the money comes along.

Old car 1990 325ix. Current car 2000 540i.
