Removing gear boot automatic

Hey guys. Have you guys ever removed the gear boot? I've asked bmw and they say if I want to replace the scratches on the gear boot, I have to buy whole shifting gear part which cost around 750$. But I'm trying to do it myself but couldn't find a way to do it online. It is just a plastic cover around the gear shifter. Or any esthetic things I can put on it to make it less visible?
