E39 No Power Steering when Extremely Cold

This last Friday was very, very cold in Toronto. My 03 530i had been parked outside all day while I was at work. In the evening when I started her up, I made sure to let it warm up for a solid 5 minutes. When I went to reverse out of the parking spot I had no power steering. I parked the car, left it running, checked the reservoir. The level was decent, slightly low but again, car was running. Closed the hood and got back in, ready to drive off without power steering and planning to take her in to get looked at, but as I drove off, magically, the power steering came back. The next morning when I was leaving for work, again, very stiff on start up, but after a bit of driving, went back to normal.

Thoughts? Opinions? Comments?

Change the PS fluid reservoir, it has a filter inside, and the fluid. If no change might need a pump.

Also check the lower steering column universal joint. if it gets contaminated (which it often does on old cars), it can freeze up in cold weather and it will feel like the PS isn't working. Flush with a can of WD40...
