E82 - Intermittent only subwoofer/low channel sound

I just bought a 2009 135i. The car came with a small cylindrical-type system in the trunk with a harness and everything attached. For the first week that I drove the car, everything was fine. Today, when I started the car up, I could only hear what sounded like a muffled sub-woofer-only sound. There was no treble or mids- just bassy sounds coming out.

This car was driven and maintained by older people so I'm wondering what could be wrong here. The head unit is stock. The speakers aren't stock from my understanding (I see that there are different speakers pulled out in the part boxes that were included with the car).

Sometimes, when I'm driving, I'll get the full range of sound. And sometimes, I'll only get the low-end/bass/muffled sound.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a look connection somewhere. Is the stock amp still in place or was it replaced with something?
