Wife kills guard in Tennessee jailbreak
Police in Tennessee are hunting down a real-life Bonnie and Clyde today after a former prison nurse shot dead a guard escorting her shackled husband from a courthouse.

George Hyatte, 34, is just two years into a 35-year sentence for aggravated assault and robbery but was taken to the Roane County Courthouse in Kingston, East Tennessee, after striking a plea bargain for a previous armed robbery charge that added another six years to his term.

As he was escorted from the building with other prisoners his wife, Jennifer Hyatte, drove up in a Ford Explorer sports utility vehicle and started shooting at the two men escorting them. One of them, Wayne 'Cotton' Morgan, was shot in the abdomen before managing to get his gun out of its holster and died soon after in hospital.

Witnesses said that George Hyatte shouted "Shoot 'em!" during the escape.

"It was just a ’Bonnie and Clyde’-style shootout," said Mark Gywn, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. "These people are very desperate and don’t have anything to lose at this point."

US newspapers reported that Jennifer, 31, was sacked from her job as a prison nurse two years ago after striking up a relationship with George Hyatte, whom she later married.

The Sheriff's Department warned that Hyatte was "extremely violent" and said he "has no care or concern what he does to anyone".

Jim Washam, the local police chief, said that murder charges were being prepared against the couple, who might be hiding out with relatives.

"We have leads coming in on their whereabouts, possibly some family members may be hiding them out. We’re trying our best to coordinate those," he said. "Right now, we can’t say if they had any help."

The couple later abandoned their vehicle and were thought to have taken to a van. Blood found in the SUV suggested that Jennifer Hyatte, 31, was wounded in the shoot-out.

Hyatte is serving two consecutive 15-year sentences for robbery convictions and a five-year sentence for assault. Several years ago he escaped from local authorities and was a fugitive for about a day after a hold-up at a drive-in market.

A prison service spokeswoman said that Hyatte was handcuffed, wore a waist chain and was shackled at the feet.
