Oops - posted the resolution to this in another thread by accident...
As it turns out, we were all wrong in our guesses. It wasn't the starter as I suspected, and it wasn't the ground strap either, but it WAS a grounding issue.
I grabbed a brand new ground strap, installed it, and got nothing. Eventually I noticed the little tab that sticks out of the engine mount arm to allow you to bolt the cable to it actually had a crack in it, and managed to snap the thing off with my finger....
Doesn't seem to propogate into the rest of the engine arm, but i'm going to have to deal with that soon so i don't dump the engine on the road one day.
Anyway, I just bolted the strap to the engine mount itself before tightening the nut back down and vroom - started right up.

That's worth adding to the collective knowledge base, for sure, under various entries:
Tabs, little, breaking thereof.
Ground issues, tracing of, all the way down.
Non-crank issues, steps after cursing.
All after:
Cars, ability to consume money, time and mental energy.

Glad you got it going now. Imagine doing the same at -20 with a wind blowing.

I ****ed with my car too much to make it dailyable... and I kind of regret it, so I'm slowly starting to work toward rectifying things like cabin noise, and too-short diff ratio.

I'd love to daily my iX this winter, but it's a heap and needs a few solid weeks' work before I could even start it.

Why are you regretting the choice to make it more DD-friendly?

You mis-read that. He's saying that he messed with his car enough that it is not DD-able anymore.

So what's everyone up to? I've got a rebuilt driveshaft to go in the 4 door, along with some stainless brake lines and another project in the works. The track car is getting some supports welded in for the wing, front splitter, new pads/rotors and gauge cluster overhaul.

I'm still dailying my E30. Got some small rust spots to deal with... Gonna do a quick fix with regular rust primer until I've got some extra money for some POR-15. Did a decent job of filling 3 rust holes in my sunroof cassette a couple of weeks ago. Still need to finish the painting.

I just tore the 4 door apart to get this maintenance project going. Decided I'm doing front control arms, control arm bushings, maybe swaybar links, driveshaft and such. Also broke a stud in the manifold getting the exhaust off so swapping that as well. With any luck I'll have it close to running by next weekend again.
