Diff question, Type 168 vs 188

I have a 94 320i (M50 6 cyl.) but the factroy come with 318's diff(type 168, small diff) other than that everything is same as other 6 cyl. model

it's easier to see the difference between type 168 and 188 diff and my question is rear axle carrier for type 168 and 188 the same?

Althought RealOem shows 318 320 323 325 328 use the same axle carrier but i've heard they're actually different is this true? I really need someone to confirm this so i can know if it needs a rear axle carrier swap as well.

REAR AXLE CARRIER 33311092625 $602.64

Noticing the size and length for diff cover on the 168 and 188. I'm guessing they both fit above axle carrier because 168 is smaller diff with a longer flange; and 188 is a bigger diff with a shorter flange to compensate each other but just my guess. Please anyone have done the swap before help me on this!! Thanks

RealOEM is not often wrong ... I'd trust that over some internet post.

Realoem uses the BMW ETK catalog, I'm just not sure what version. It's more then likely right. If you want to double check call a dealership and have them look it up. I two have hear that it's a different subframe, but I've heard it's the same. Depends on who you ask I guess.

3:45 for the 5spd.

I myself have been under both type 168 (mine) and a type 188 (Smashed323) with a mesuring tape. The bolting points to the subframe are identicle as are the diff mounting points, although the type 168 is about 1/2 " smaller in diameter then the type 188's carrier.

I just got myself ETK 08 2006 version and yes it's shows the diff carrier the same for following cars

so i guess i could use the type 188 diff and drive axle from 325 328 and just bolt on my 320
