E46 Traction Control
Is the traction control normally on in an E46 and pushing the button (light turns on in the dash) turns it off or is it normally off and pushing the button turns it on?

By default, the ASC-T or DSCII Traction/Stability control are on when you start the car. The light is off on the dash.
When the light flashes, that means it is doing something to control the car.
If you push the button, and the light stays lit on the dash, you have turned off traction/stability control. Time to have fun...

not just that but if you push it and the light comes on then its off but not fully off. You need to hold it down till you see two lights on then its really off.

Not entirely true.
If you have DSC, then yes. Pushing the button off removes the DSC, but leaves you with the traction control (I believe the ASC-T). If you hold it long enough or push it again, it should turn off the second part and put a second light on (brake light). You are on your own then.
However, if you only have ASC-T, then I believe pushing it once will turn it off completely. You are on your own. You only get the one light.
DSC is an extension of the older ASC-T system.
E46 cars could be had with either option, as DSC was an option for a while. It all depended on the option and model of car you have.

Thanks guys. I figured it was on by defalt. I have to say that it handles like shit with it on in the snow. If I turn it off the car reacts way better in the snow.

amen to that!
although it may have saved my ass a few times, I'd still much rather enjoy RWD and leave it off.

Interesting! I've been bitching about mine for the past few weeks, but haven't had the cajones to turn it off. I have brand new Toyo snow tires and I have so little grip its scary. DSC is like a friggin disco light. It doesn't STOP blinking. Christ even when I'm doing 100KM/h and I punch it, I can light it up and it hasn't been that way before. I'm scared if I turn DSC off, I'll die a quick death. Either these new tires suck, or I have serious alignment problems.

make sure your snows were installed with the right orientation.
some are directional now, just like performance and if they are the opposite direction it's like plastic on an ice rink

Can someone tell me the difference between the DSC and the ASC-T??
In my car it's similar as there is a way to turn off 2 stages of traction control. I know in the older MB's you could never completely turn off traction control. Which is what drove a lot of buyers towards BMWs, but today it seems a little bit different. However, when I get to the second step it turns EVERYTHING off, including ABS and I dunno what else...
Maybe someone out there owns an MB and BMW who can understand what I'm mumbling about?? The car calls it "dyno mode"...
