How much should a non-vanos M50 without any accesories (no intake manifold either) go for? I was quoted around 600 so far.

Guys, any ideas why the car feels perfectly normal past 3.5k rpm? I can feel full power, and no vibrations or anything! (at least in gears 1 and 2, haven't tried in the others)

At 3500 rpm the remaining 5 cylinders are producing enough power that you don't notice the difference. There is a definite power surge in this engine at ~3200 rpm; I think that's when the ram-air effect they design into it really starts to kick in.
You know, if the cylinder head is in good shape you might want to consider a short block. You get new/rebuilt lower parts (crankshaft, pistons, block etc) and put your good cylinder head on it. Probably be cheaper than a full re-build.

So I'm just curious, other than a piston ring, what else could it be?
My dad couldn't help talking to his own mechanic and he said it's unlikely it's actually a bent piston, as you would have to be beating the car very hard for that to happen, maybe downshifting too soon or something.
He says 99% of the motors he's opened because of lost compression on some cyclinder, it was because of some sort of valve (rubber) that leaks because of an improper seal. Does this sound familiar to anyone at all??

^^ flav.. until you actually open up the engine.. you really dont know what it can be.. could be numerous things... simpliest one would be worn out or split piston rings to the worst case scenerio of actual burn thru on the piston head from bad detonation.. if your not doing a swap.. consider a complete rebuild as its a much wiser choice, then a partial rebuild.
