please help. steering issues

i got some steering issues to my 95 318is and i was wondering if anyone has/had some issues with this. My steering seems to be much heavier than 2days ago when i drive my car. I thought it was the cause of the ice jammed between the wheel well and the tires, after digging all the ice and things out, the steering is still the same.. so i bring it to a body shop to get it check thinking it is the power steering problem. The mechanic said the steering pump is working fine...i even let my friend tried it(who also happen to drive an e36) and he said the steering is indeed weird and too heavy for it to be normal.. so if anyone have gotten some answers for me or recommandation for a shop i should bring it to get it checked. thank you in advance

^^ RMP or Bimmersport, both are sponsors and come highly recommended. Look in the sponsors section for telephone & address.

How's the power steering fluid? Maybe the rack is on it's way out?

On mine I kept filling the Fluid every 2 days and tried to find the leak and nothing. Took one of the sleaves of the rack and a ton of fluid pissed out...time for a new rack. Other then that I really don't have a clue.

Oh, when you turn your wheel does it make a big whiney noise?

I have the same problem, took it to the mechanic an he told me that the rack is pitted from corrosion so the oil is bypassing, and this problem is worse during cold days. I just live with is b/c is an expensive fix.

The mechanic I use is Alex at Daytona auto, they have been good to over the years. If you decide to take it to them, make sure you are having that problem with the car at the time. For me the problem is intermitten, so if you dont have then problem at the time you take it to them, it might not be diagnosed properly.

heres their site: http://www.daytonaauto.ca/

whining sound when you turn the wheel is usually the pump low on fluid or the pump is just bad..

I have the same problem and the same issue with the shop I went to. They say the pump is working but dont know what to do.. Keep updating please and so will I. (Hope you dont mind me sharing your post) I was reading yesterday in the Bently manual that the strut bearings should be checked. Mine steers real hard cold and after it warms up it gets better for a while and then sometimes not.. The pump might be making just a little bit of a sound but not the howl you hear when they are real bad. (just like if you turn all the way to one side or the other when you hit the stop it makes the pump growl)

Im so frustrated with this car... I love to drive it but im fixing it too much. so cant drive it all the time... I hope its not the rack!!! I did find one for $250. but labor will be high...

i got another mechanic to check out the steering problem and this time the mechanic said after he changed the steering fluid, it is still dirty after turning the wheel a couple of times. And the pump is making this burning smell, so maybe my problem is actually the pump itself... He also checked the bottom of the steering to make sure nothing is leaking and rusting there.

Your problem is exactly like mine except mine makes this whining sound also. So my best bet is to get it checked out like i did.
