BMW's new... thing.
There's a flash demo on the bmw website here

BMW's fairly well known for its nifty in-car implementation of technology, and although certain aspects have received their fair share of criticism, the firm has something brewing that could cause quite a stir -- of course, that would require us to actually know what it is. A snazzy flash website unveils a sleek, continually morphing device that touts the ability to play MP3s, DVDs and CDs, has USB and Bluetooth connectivity options, can recognize voice commands, and has a 65,000 color LCD to boot; but in the end, we're still left to wonder how it relates to the company's vehicles (if at all). Sure, we've seen BMW-branded watches and the like, but it's not exactly usual to see an automaker producing multifaceted consumer electronics, and while it may end up just another technological aspect of a car, it looks like something you just might tote around. Thankfully, we shouldn't have to wait too awfully long until the veil is removed, as it should get official in just a few weeks, but until then, be sure to click on through for a few more glamor shots.

i have never tried the i-drive before. and i would really like to know what the big problem is?
i feel most of the people that complain are simply computer illiterate people or retards or impatient. who tried it... what is it like? prove me wrong
i keep looking for a chance to try it.

I use computer's all day long, I surround myself with them. I found iDrive cumbersome and pretty useless. I had to move the joystick thing 3 moves before I could even use the radio.
its one thing trying to use it while parked, and completely another thing when you're trying to use it while driving.
Eventually you get used to it. (i guess)

I tried iDrive on my boss's car, and it's very confusing. try selecting something in the upper right corner and you will keep getting either the menu to the left, or to the top. But my boss is comfortable enough with it that he can do it pretty good now. Practice makes perfect I guess.
And on the note of that BMW... thing. I want one too! I just hope its not 400+ dollars.

I drive is actually pretty cool, once you get used to it. Even my computer illiterate Dad is doing just fine with it, took him a week to get good at it.

you mean like that Keanu Reeves movie Johnny Mnemonic where people have built in hard drives in their head with a jack at the back?

I was thinking more like the Matrix, but yea that will do too. Funny how Keanu Reeves always has something stuck in the back of his head.
