Help removing strut from ball joint

We are trying to replace front shocks on 89 325is, having trouble seperating ball joint on control arm from strut housing. Used hammer, punch and pickle fork so far. Any special tools or tricks?

Get a bigger hammer. I use a 14 lb sledge, takes a few solid whacks.

I struggled with mine as well when I was installing new coilovers. I tried everything, hammer, pickle fork, punch, propane torch to heat it up, without any luck.

I ended up purchasing a proper ball joint remover from Canadian Tire and it came off in less than 2mins.

Further details in a E30tech.com thread;
