The Shawdowline trim is just a flat black trim that replaces the chrome trim around the windows and such. Some people just paint their chrome trim with a certain paint for the same effect, or you can buy the actual Shadowline trim. I believe it's from 318's.
Here's a pic:

You take the chrome off and replace it. Last time I saw the complete kit for sale on R3vlimited, the guy was asking $200 US, but that was in good shape. You could paint your chrome trim for much cheaper, just depends how picky you are.

Cotts - Yeah, not my car, but the rims are 17" Kopi's (Alpina copies)
Mike - I'm under the impression you can put it back on, but you just have to be very careful when pulling it off, or you can get some bad bends in it, and then it's pretty much useless.

Some people use flat black vinyl tape to produce the same effect, which is a little easier and less messy then painting. The tape is the same stuff vinyl stickers/graphics are made of and is actually quite durable and stands up to rock chips a bit better then paint. If you just want to see what your car could look like with shadowline you could use electrical tape for a quick temporary look.

Picture that, but black. I plan on having my body shop scuff/sand/paint them while we're repainting the car... If that doesn't work I'll just get OEM stuff, I know of a guy in TO has a set off a 318is
