Playing MP3's on stock 03 E46 stereo?

Well I searched through about 200 posts, and couldn't find any info on this yet, so I thought I'd post.

First off, hello, name is Jon, and I'm from London, Ont. I picked up my first bimmer 2 days ago, and it's a 2003 silver 325i. The car is absolutely mint, and loaded...got the Harman Kardon upgrade etc.

My question is this...according to the specs/order guide on this car, the stereo is "mp3 capable" with the harman kardon setup. Last night I burned an mp3 cd and tried to play it, and it just sat there saying "Track 01", and I couldn't hear anything...

Are there only certain types of blanks it can read, or can it even play mp3's?

Also, does anyone know if the harmon kardon system has any kind of aux.-in port on the back or anything? I would really like to hook my ipod into the system, but I don't want to pull apart the dash for no reason.

Thanks in advance.

Is the CD player build date 2003? I've seen lots of them play mp3's maybe a quick search at e46fanatics will help to clarify?

I'm still getting some mixed messages here...some people with the 03 have told me they are playing mp3's just fine...

Is it possible the deck can only read under 8 character file names.mp3 or something like that?

You are correct. Early build '03 cars have the older headunit, and cannot play MP3 files.

Hmm... So radios made after September 2003 have capability to play mp3 CDs.
But, wouldn't those radios be installed in 2004 model year?.. and I'd doubt that all 2004 would have those radios. You can buy a next year's model sometimes even in early August of the current year.

He meant Sept/02 build, '03 model year.

And I'm not even sure that's the right month (it may be Oct/Nov), but I know for sure a few months of '03 E46's cannot play MP3s. And FYI, model year's start with July build.
