formula for making a sub box

I am making a sub box and i have been told that you only want a certain amount of space in the box for the air to move. I was also told there is a formula. Would this be for sealed or ported boxes? or both? The box i am making is going to be a sealed box. Any one know waht this formula is?

Different subwoofers have different requirements - do you know the model of the sub you're planning on using?

the sub you buy should come with reccomended box sizes and dimensions...

you should be able to look up the subs minimum required box size on the companys website that makes it.Maybe see if you can find someone with termpro ( fosgate software) sub box software to make a simple box spec for you

yes to all above ports,but in general they all the same size....LxHxD diveded by 1728...I can make you a box MATT........it is easy as 1,2,3.......

Well most subs come with a specific cubic feet volume for a sealed box. usually between .7 and 2.8 cubic feet.

let's say it's 1 cube

1 cubic foot is 1728 cubic inches (12x12x12) inches right?

now that won't fit where you want the box to go usually so you have to retain the same internal volume but play around with the height x width x depth.

mulitpy 1(cubic feet) x 1728 = 1728 cubic inches
devide 1728 by your height (lets use 16") = 108
devide 108 by your width (lets use 14") = 7.7 (or 7 3/4 inches)

so now you have your dementions 16" x 14" x 7,3/4"

To double check when your done: 16x14x7.75 = 1736 (cubic inches), 1736 / 1728 = 1.004 (cubic feet) ...close enough

you can use any shape box as long as the speaker will fit into it and it has the internal volume specified by the the speaker manufaturer or by someone who knows how to design a speaker box.
