Air/Fuel Mixture

1995 325is - Car wont pass emmisssions, Dealer did diagnostics ($120.00) and they found no faults, all systems are running with in parameters, then they recommend me to another shop, more diagnostics($200.00) and recommends i buy 02 sensor and a factory $800.00 cats,This will be the second cat and 02 sensor in 5 months, the car i think is running rich or lean so its messing up the catalytic so why would i buy an $800.00 catalytic to burn it up, i need to diagnose the problem first, im $320.00 in and neither one has diagnosed a single thing.I have an air/ fuel mixture gauge hooked up to the 02 sensor it goes from lean to stoich and never hits the rich, i dont no if its hooked up right or because the 02 is gone..I heard the the gauge should osculate quickly from lean to rich and mine only osculates to stoich slowly..I have dinan chip, cold air intake, headers and freeflow exhaust, the exhaust and headers was added after the chip, do need a different chip, any help diagnosing this would be a great help, every shop wants to do diagnostis, but the dealer didnt find anything ..Is there an EGR valve on this car and were is it located and whats thePart#...

Me too....

At 40km/h
Reading -- Result -- Allowed -- Result
HC ppm -- 144 -----58 ------- FAIL
CO % ---- 0.57 ----0.32 ----- FAIL
NO ppm -- 547 -----435 ------FAIL

HC ppm
Told it was unburt gas so I've since changed the plugs, which I hope will burn the fuel in the cylinder more effectively.

CO %
What causes a high reading?

NO ppm
What causes a high reading?

Thanks Justin!

I talked with my tech friend and our thoughts are:
EGV - he says E36 doesn't have one?
Coils - he said my car would be misfiring, etc. if it was this
Injectors - he said I'd notice bigger/more problems if this was the case

So we've come to the conclusion it's most likely a vaccum leak. I'll update with the results...

I assume you guys warmed up the car nicly before doing the test? Like 5000rpm runs for a good 10 minutes. Also, isn't there some limit on how many parts $$$ you throw at it before they give you a conditional pass (not that that's the answer)? The chip should definitly be tuned for the mods you have ... you could always go to a dyno and hook up to a proper AF meter.

I think your car might be running extremely lean and caused your new cats to go. Lean makes your exhaust extremely hot whihc will melt the inside of the catylitic. If you drove around for 5 months in this condition, your cat will be dead by now and you will need a new one. However, we need to find out why your car is running lean all the time. I would suggest a new O2 and get the EGR checked...it might be clogged or stuck. What grade of fuel do you use? If you have your car chipped and use cheap gas, you will be running in a lean position.
