5 series advice

Hey there,

Looking for some advice. I was thinking of picking up a 97-99 525 or 528. What do you guys think of these motors? Any common problems? What should I be looking out for during my search? Any help/advice would be truly appreciated.

Thanks in advacne,

~maz

here is a good link to a resource that lists common e39 problems. there are some 540 specific issues there but most of the list relates to e39 in general.
http://www.540i6.com/probsfixes.html

there are also some known double-vanos issues that are discussed on the RoadFly board
http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39/

the thread I am talking about is here:
http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39/7494631-1.html

it might not be related to the cars you want to buy I don't know when the double vanos was introduced to the 6 cyl engines.

many say e39 is not a reliable car, others think it is. All depends on what you got. There are lemons out there and there are solid e39 too.

its a reliable car if you do all the maintenance, which isn't exactly cheap.

one thing I can think of is the thrust arms, I'm getting that problem now days while doing around 80km/h and this vibration come up, alignment, re balanced the wheels 3 times, and still there.

MadChigga - looks like you got the thrust arm bushings issue. about time to replace them

by the way. the parts for my 540 are generally cheaper then parts for my father in law's Chrysler Cirrus - go figure.
