Look at my post "Thanks to RMP" i too was looking at a 97 318i with a 1.9 ltr 4 banger, while the exterior and interior was great, the underpinnings (ie: bushing, tie rod and gasline were shot). The vehicle also had only 116,000 kms on it and when RMP inspected it oil was leaking around the head gasket. According to Rocco @ RMP, the 4 banger in a e36 is just to underpowered for the vehicles weight, hence it will struggle and blow something. Also the owner of this 97 318i is a conservative driver. I managed to pick up a 325is the same day though.

I havent heard or experienced any problems with m42 reliability...

and how is that a "deal" ? It is merely a fair asking price for what is now basically a ten year old car.
