E39 540 engine question
Does anyone on here know for sure if M62 early heads (97-98) can be bolted to a newer ( dual Vanos ) bottom end without issue ?
Anyone done it ? Which head gasket should be used ? Anything I should know before trying it ?
Thanks,
Rick

Are you going to replace just the bottom end in an older car? If so the bottom end will work with the early non vanos heads, use the gaskets from the heads. (They may be the same)

Maybe Rick has holes in his bottom end. I mean the bottom end of the engine of course.

Yeah we do have holes in our bottom end, at least 3 broken rods, and just try to find a good used m62 bottom end. We found a low km vanos longblock that had a cooling fan fire and we want to swap the timing kit and heads since we don't have the vanos electronics.

stolen, joyride, recovered.
But it's amazing how many m62 blocks you can find that look exactly like this.
This is PBilodeau's 97 540iA We are collaborating on it.
