History of Business

I have a research assignment proposal due on Wednesday. We were given a bunch of topics, and I narrowed it down to these:

How important was the entrepreneur to the success of business?
or
Write a history of a single company, accounting for its success or failure
or
Write a history of a single commodity, explaining its social and/or economic impact.

I am having trouble thinking of a half decent entrepreneur, company or commodity to write about. Seeing as it is business HISTORY whatever I write about has to be a couple years old.

I have already thought of BMW, but I am not sure how easy it will be to find failures that BMW ran into over the years.

So do you guys have any suggestions

PS. Although I am sure something like weed or Hugh Heffner would be a funny thing to write about, it probably isn't the best idea for a University paper

Oil would be a good example of a commodity to write about. very storied past and involves the entire world in many aspects

A good entrepeneur could be Bill Gates or Donald Trump

Chrysler has had a pretty interesting history if you want to do an automotive related topic. How the company was formed, the Iacocca years, and then the merger with Mercedes is quite interesting.

I was gonna suggest Hbc too, 336 years of history, only to be bought out by an American for $ 1.1 billion...there were interesting events leading up to this buyout however, so yeah this would be a great idea, although there is a lot of history to cover...

P.S. i used to work for Hbc's head office so if you do this company then i can provide some help for ya, let me know
