HID retrofit into my e30

Hey

anyone done it? got pics?
i heard that there was someone on max that had done e39 projectors into e30, but cannot find the post.

Why don't you just use E30 elipsoids like everyone else, and drop in a plug n play kit. Much easier, and it'll save you muchos dollars.

HIDs projectors spread the light better and wider.

Im trying to get my hands on some projectors so i can retrofit them

Use that to get an idea of what projectors to use from which car. The dimensions are extremely useful.

No way fogs can light as far and as wide as HID projectors. In reality they only shoot out under 30ft.

well, your low beams are for the distance, the fogs will cover the width. how far away do you have to see to the right or left of you?

If you're turning fast (highway ramps, late track nights) you'll want very distant and wide lighting. Fogs have no purpose outside of fog, don't make them something they aren't and can't be.

Real HID projectors will have less glare (although our halogen housings do have little of it relative to others), and also lack the blinding flare of BMW ellips (minus the US oddities).

Mystikal is correct

Ellipsoids were designed for halogens, i e there is some amount of light that is leaking past the cutoff edge (that somewhat gets into other drivers' eyes) - it is tolerable for halogens but unacceptable for stronger and higher K HID light output. OEM projectors OTOH were designed for HID strength and do much better job in cutting the light

Also as i said already, one doesn't have to go to lower output 5k+ color hids to get blue tint. With real projectors, one gets the bluish edge due to dispersion of light.

Hopefully i will once finish my retro and will show off the result

us spec elipsoid cut off is pretty good, I don't think there will be much of a difference, as Jay said.

other than the wider beam pattern, I don't see any other benefit. I guess if you can find them at a reasonable price or if you can manage to find bi-xenon it would be more worth it.

will be interesting to compare to stock elipsoids when you're done. let us know.

I would have to disagree somewhat with the above statements.
I have done the retrofit into stock ellipsoids, however it wasn't just a simple "plug and play". The secret is to take great care in measuring the focal point of the bulbs. The D2S bulbs are off about 3 millimetres in depth. If you use a dremel and measure VERY accurately you will get excellent results. It takes an extra hour but is well worth the effort.

ie. 1) I have excellent beam spread and distance- can see both shoulders well and very far in front.
2) I have never been 'flashed' for blinding an oncoming driver
3) Good cutoff and I use the 4300K bright white bulbs

There are kits that are made to fit in your stock housings, they have the correct measurements for the stock bulb, so you don't have to do any measurements yourself.

The cut off point he's refering to is the blue haze that comes off the stock HID housings due to the curvature of the elipsoid.

Mgyver, seen your car in front of Ryerson a few months ago, and at charlie's place getting that M50 swap
