Question Headlights dim at idle. '88 325 is

I have noticed now that when I sit at idle at an intersection or in traffic and my headlights and heater fan are on (set at 3), my lights dim and then when I increase the engine speed by either A. reving the motor or B. moving forward, the lights brighten up.

Now I have a brand new interstate battery, so I was wondering if this may be an indication that my alternator is about to shit the bed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

i think ur alternator is starting to go...thats what happened with my e30 until eventually it died...other signs u can look for is the parking brake light, brake wear light and abs light(if u have abs) to stay on all the time even wen ur driving...

Thanks, I'm probably going to change the alternator anyway, I don't want to get stuck in the cold.

Is the Voltage regulator part of the alternator, like the one in VW's??

Couldn't it just be his idle is too low to power the alternator?

Gott to give credit where it is deserved, if this alternator is 18yrs old, then you know what quality is.

Also, the alternator v-belt could be loose or your body ground straps are loose, dirty or corroded.

My lights dim slightly when the bass hits. More so when I had my old alt.
