They key is though to actually let yourself go, and keep your body relaxed (most people clench/flex their bodies before an accident, and thats what causes most injury).

I think you are way more exposed on a bike and a whole lot more likely to get injured. Padding is ok for nicks and scrapes from falling, but impacting something just will hurt all bones and body "material."
The brain impulse signals the body to prepare for impact, tighten up.
I would find it very difficult to relax my body if I see I am going to fly into something at 250 clicks.
You see the racing bike riders fall and somewhat look relaxed, but most never crashed into anything and they are off the bike.
