The exhaust made the 40hp difference. When the facelifted G35 sedan, which is the one you're looking at was released, they gave it a new exhaust which gave it the extra 40, thus matching it to 280. The G35 Coupe facelift should get a 20hp increase to match the 350Z's 300hp.
When the G35 sedan released, it had 260hp. The exhaust claimed to make the extra 20hp for the coupe, which like you said had 280hp.

Any exhaust that restricts 40hp wouldn't be healthy for an engine!
