Definitely check out the Golf/Jetta III forum.

3 gas motors. The 1.8L was only available on the Golf CL. 8V = wood anyway. VR6 sounds hot. Mk3 Golfs and Jettas were available with turbo diesel engines too, but only late Jettas were available with the more advanced TDI engine.

1.8L 8V = 90 hp
2.0L 8V = 115 hp
VR6 12V = 174 hp

I lined up with a MK3 VR6, we went at it from a stop 5 times. I won by a bit (1-3 cars) each time, we were typically doing around 170 by the end of each run.

The mk4 12v's are a bit slower than the mk3 12v.
I'm thinking of picking up an e30 too sometime in the future.
