Hawk Pics

There is this Hawk that hangs out a few houses down from me and I finally had a chance to take pics of him. This damn mocking bird kept messing with him.

I've been shooting with a tokina 400mm AF telephoto with a doubler on my D70. Makes for about 1200mm range. Lately, I've been shooting with my Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 D lens with the doubler that gives me about 600mm. It's sharper but, not as large. Still large enough for a decent crop though. I'm still learning alot about this camera.

d70 is a kickass digicam and 1200mm is nothing short of incredible zoom but tell me kind of lens attachment is a doubler, is it part of the camera or an extra lens attachment that goes between the cam and the telephoto?

The doubler is actually called a teleconverter. There is basically two choices to select from. The 1.4x or the 2.0x.

There are various brands from Nikon, Tamron, Sigma etc. I got a cheap little Quantaray for like 79 bucks but, it works pretty darn good I want the Tamron pro Sp 2.0x. It's made to work with the D type Nikon lenses and is supposed to rock and it should for 189 bucks.

The only thing about using a teleconverter is that it slows you lens down. A 2.0x teleconverter will usually slow your lens down two full stops and works best in bright sunlight or for static objects in poor lighting a tripod would be essential. Here is a pic at 1200mm from my tripod.

OMG, I was working in the front yard just now with the wifey and saw a smaller hawk sitting in a tree where the big one hangs out. The mocking bird was there pissing him off too thats what got my attention.

Then all of a sudden the hawk flys out of the tree like a missle towards me and to the right. Hes dive bombing. I watch him fly into another tree then, he's back out in a split second. He is after a bird!

The bird is trying to get away but, the hawk catches him in flight and flys away with the poor bird grasped on his talons. The hawk had him before he could fly across the street. Simply amazing. I'm not sure if this is a hawk or falcon. I caught a pic of him yesteday and I'll attach it here and see what u guys think.

I was blown away! I wish I had my dayam camera with me at that moment. That pic would of been to cool.

Here he is!
