Unhappy engine running hot

my car's been running weird lately...

the temp gauge is fine but the engine bay gets crazy hot

there's also more engine noise than normal - just sounds kinda loud

what should i be looking for?...

(car's at 204,000 kms now)

... i just had my s/s exhaust repaired ... there was a small hole approx. 2" dia - my mechanic welded a steel plate on and painted it up... it's sounds more normal but maybe it's still messed

how would i know if there's a leaking head gasket?... same symptoms right
