how'd he do this to his sides?

normally when the side rubbing strips/ trims are removed, it'll look like this right? (andre's) look closely.


but i'd love this look when i go paint my car.
in the pic attached...

did he attached some sort of panel onto the sides? or is this how cabrios are made?
