Youre talking about the 3M Hood Protector; the clear plastic film that is custom pasted on the hood.

I got it put on by the dealer and it works awesome. I drive on the highway a lot and the 3M protector has taken a beating, but has protected my paint. Id put it on my next new car as well.

It wont yellow or anything either. The dealer showed me a 3 or 4 year old one.. and it was still clear.

I paid $180 taxes included for it installed at the dealer.
I don't know if I paid too much, but I saw other cars they had done 1-2 years back, and it still looked fine.

I recommend using SHIELDPRO. They offer mobile service and will do it at your convenience. The 3M film is precut by a computer to fit your car's front end and the complete professional installation takes about 1 hour. They also do custom applications for aftermarket bumpers and rare cars. Price is around $150 - $250 depending on application. I beleive they have franchises around the country, so contact John Cookson for info on the one nearest you.

Randy, one question I had is, what happens when you go to wax the car? Wouldn't the wax get caught in the outer lip of the plastic?

i guess it would if you use a wax that flakes off and turns white when dry. I use Meguiar's Gold Class wax which goes on clear so I can't really answer your question. It's really not that big a deal considering what is saves you in repairing paint chips every year. A trick to take wax residue off edges is using a toothbrush on the edges after you're done buffing.

That's what I was looking for .. thank you. I figured it would be a good investment, since I'm getting my hood and my front bumper repainted in the spring.

yup, definately need to get this done after I repaint.. especially for my fogs and euro headlights... glass and flying rocks aren't a good combination.
