Replacing Timing Chains
I need to replace the Timing Chains on my Explorer, there're 4 Chains in the engine... and I got a quote for $800~ (labour and parts)
Anywhere I should go to get it done cheaper? I'm broke.
note: Not Timing Belt.

just curious, why do you 'need' to replace them?

nope, it's not a dealership quote, and I'm actually gonna go to a dealership to see what their offer is... they've checked on a reference book saying the labour is 8.5 hours..... so I'm hoping to find a fast moving professional to find out what I really NEED to do and How Much.
the engine is making a lot of noise (esp during cold start idle... ticking ticking... rough starting... ) and I was told they have to be replaced as soon as possible... when I bought the car 3 months ago.

Generally timing chains should last almost forever. Maybe its tensioners or guides?
I know in the toyota avalon manual it says "under normal operation no timing chain replacement interval" or something to that effect.
If it was me I might get a second opinion?

most likely the tensioner, not the chain. If the tensioner is loose it will grumble and sound really rough, especially at lower RPM"s... like a growling sound.

UMMMM timing chains do not do what you said is happening , the ticking noise is from the lifters thay are know for that at higher mileage , and the rough idling could be a dirty throttle body . I would say the tensioner might be loose , get a long screwdriver and put it on the timing chain cover with vehicle running and see if you hear the noise through the screwdriver end.

Yeah, the ticking if from the lifters, Timing chains are meant to last the life of the car and are rarely replaced.......Probably the tensioners, I would get a second opinion from somewhere else.......

thanks for the replies guys, I went to the dealership today and found out that there WAS a recall for the tensioner, and intake manifold gasket. I'm gonna bring the car in tomorrow and have a check up... and clean up the throttle body and see how it goes.
