I checked all vaccum hose they are connected, spark plugs are all carbon fouled
and I have a check engine light that goes away and comes back on. what could be the problem?

u really should take your car to someone who knows how to work on them.

check the seal on the oil cap and make sure the dip stick is all the way in.

Check your engine mounts.. that's a lot of shake. I'm no expert on the 4cyls. The plugs should be beige to white, if they are black or bridged with oil then you have a serious oil return pressure issue or something. I'd agree with Creeker and have someone who is familiar with that engine have a look at it.

You said the check engine light comes on... do the stomp test and tell us what the code is.

^^ to do the stomp test. turn the ign to the on position where the dash lights come on. Stomp once quickly on the gas pedal - release wait a sec then stomp another 5 times repeatedly and wait( opps correction 5 times total -thx). you may have to do this a few times to get the timing right before the check engine flashes to give you a sequential code.

just count how many times it flashes for each digit - remember it's 4 digit code.

It's just 5 times, not 6
