Also sorry I dont know the rules better, but it sounds like the E36 gets penalty laps? Why is that? is it because it's newer/cost more than what is considered a 'chump car'?

On Sunday, it was an mr2 and a crazy death-trap- looking cougar that were 1 and 2. Both had engine swaps iirc. Friday was an integra and a neon, and Saturday was the same mr2 and integra.

They changed the rules for this so that all cars have an "assigned" value now- the e36 325i is declared as being worth $540, so we started 4 laps down, and we were still 1 lap back from 1st and 2nd.

It's more to equalize the field, and the cars- so this way every e36 starts at the same spot and it's not who was able to get the cheapest ads.

A big congrats. And a great write up. I saw you guys on track lots. We were racing the # 134 e30. We did not have a great weekend however. Friday crank pully break down. Saturday crash at the bus stop at 150km/h into the wall. Miraculously Fixed it for Sunday and crashed sunday ending the race only 1 hour in and ending the cars life......

We'll miss the Calabogie race in July but we'll be back for the 24 hours of VIR in August with a new 325is chassis that got donated to us by one of our competing teams.

Again, thank you for sharing your experiences and well written. Congrats on that 3rd place. A truly awesome feat considering the size of the field!!!

Thanks guys - we had an awesome weekend, despite blowing our transmission on saturday. Thankfully it got stuck in 4th, which was the best gear for it to be in, and we did about 3.5-4 hours of the race that way, and were able to still finish 4th. We swapped in our spare on saturday evening and sunday was problem-free, other than the crazy front left tire wear. we drove hard, and it paid off

we ran a used set on saturday (full track) and corded a front left after 7 hours. We had stickers for sunday (short track), and killed the front left in 4, then another front left (used) in the next 2, and then finished the race with a 3rd front left (which was the right rear from saturday).

So basically 2.5 sets!

Shit... we hadn't planned on needing to bring more than 2 sets... I wonder how many sets guys go through in the 24s?

Really depends on the track- calabogie has a pretty abrasive surface, and the short track is especially hard on the front left.

At watkin's glen, we could have used one set for the full 20hours and had lots of tread to spare.

For the 12 hour in September at calabogie, we'll probably bring 2 sets of fresh tires.

Right on. What tire size did you guys run?

So to run an E36, you guys are basically having to lap the field like 5 times right? I'm working hard to make our car fit 500 but if a few laps seems to be imminently overcome-able with a competitive car, maybe it's not that big a deal?

225/45R15

Yeah pretty much. Again, depends on the track- at the glen, we finished 3rd but were still 2 laps down on 1st & 2nd. And a few key players didn't make it to the end.

It's definitely a huge advantage if you can keep it under $500. Although, if you are going to take penalty laps, make sure the mod is worth enough time so that you can make it up:

For example, assuming a 2:30 lap, in a 6 hour race, the mod worth $10 or less would have to be worth more than 1.5seconds/lap to be able come up in the positive.
