Help please. 91 318is

First time poster. Just found this forum! I am the original owner of my '91 318is. 160,000 kms. No winters. Always garaged, covered, and babied. I drove it all summer for about 6years. My dad and son both have had it for a bit but about 8 years ago it came back to me. Mostly it has been in a nice safe spot ! Very original and , I think, exceptionally clean

Over 23 years I have done routine maintenance, alternator, rad, water pump, exhaust, tires etc. and I don't remember everything although I have a big file of original documentation and invoices. Frankly it has been really good and has not cost much to own. I still really like this car and it has a big piece of my heart in it. I only drive it very occasionally now. Maybe 500 kms a year on nice days.

Tomorrow it is going into a local specialist shop (The Garage, Barrie) to fix a very minor coolant leak. While it is in can you guys suggest anything that I can ask them to do as a "project". I would not mind spending a bit of money to keep it nice. Brake lines, bushings, fuel lines, shocks etc. I am not aware that it needs anything but would like to just keep on top of it to keep it "special". It really is a nice little car ! Thanks for any advice

Since you are the original owner; have you ever had the front profile gasket done? it was a very common problem with the M42 engine in the e30s. there is an update for this now which will prevent it from happening again.

Aside from this; if it is that well taken care of with only 160k? I sincerely feel there is nothing you have to concern yourself with except maybe rear shock mounts. Suspension is bilstein and they will last another 100-150k easily. No winters means no rust which means brake lines, fuel lines should be intact. maybe get the A/c checked to make sure it's working 100%. Aux fans usually stop working due to blown resistor or seized fan. But from the sounds of it you're car is really nice and best to keep it original. It will fetch top dollar one day.

Thank you. I will ask them to look at that gasket. I have always figured that the car is worth about $5000. But just googling over the week end I have seen prices from $9500 to a crazy $24,950. I love the car but never thought it was worth that kind of money ! I think I paid about $34,000. Which seemed like a lot at the time ! It is a long term car for me and my son will get it back at some time. We both ride BMW R1100S bikes. Mine bought new in '99. Now with120,000 kms. It has also been really good !

Nice to see some BMW owners didn't dump their car for a newer model.

How many km's do you usually get on a full tank? If you're getting good mileage, no smoke under hard acceleration and no crazy noises should should be good for another 100k or more.

Well seeing as it's not driven daily I would make sure to change the tranny, diff and brake fluid every year or two, regardless of the mileage. You may also want to address the timing chain and maybe the oil pump soon... although the chain can last the life of the engine the guides, sprockets and tensionner can wear out or fail. May also be a good idea to perform a compression and leak down test, see if any trouble is brewing inside the engine.

Ceeker: What's this update you speak of, mine is leaking a bit around the water pump area.

can't remember when I last put a full tank of gas through the car and was able to pay attention to how far I went - I know the gas in it right now is from the only fill up I did last year ... Stabil over the winter and it is running fine - I always do think though how good it is on gas so I "think" gas mileage is fine - no smoke out the tail pipe

the car is in the shop this morning - will keep you posted
