The main cooling lines came from the M5 witg only 40k miles, so they have lots of life...most other hoses had to be custom fitted. Also replaced all belts and filters, trans mounts are to be done as soon as we get the car back.

Hi Eurostyle,

I'm working on this project as well: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...-underway.html and I was wondering what you had to do to get the fuel leak detection pump to work. Also, did you have to make custom heater hoses, fuel lines, etc.? I'd like to pick your brain a bit and I'd love to see some more detailed pics inside the engine compartment of your oil filter housing bracket and what you did to fit the drivers side air box if you wouldn't mind.

Thanks.

Hi,
Nice to see another S62 E38 project! But after reading most of the 14 pages, i have to say a LOT of people are misinformed about various aspects of the swap. Pretty much everything had to be custom fitted, but using ALL OEM BMW parts from various years and models. The bracket for the oil filter housing had to be custom made (2 day job) and the intake is a hybrid of E38/M5 on the right, and modified M5 on the left side (half day job). All pedals are OEM parts, using early (pre 97) 540i clutch master (same as euro E38 with manual trans). The hood HAS to be modified to use the stock intake manifold. The list goes on and on!!!

At this point we have the engine running, just need the driveshaft done, exhaust and some suspension upgrades!

What has to be done to the hood? I think we've figured out the heater hoses and fuel lines already, but I was just curious how others had done it. I too am using all OEM parts and modifying a few to be made to work. I used my 01 pedal assembly and just added the clutch pedal to it since the 728i was still sold in Europe with the manual transmission. I used the pre-97 540i clutch master cylinder as well. We also custom mounted the M5 steering gearbox to the 740i subframe. I've got the driveshaft already lengthened by Carolina Driveline in Spartanburg, SC. Only cost $159 plus shipping each way. We're getting ready to install the driveline tomorrow morning, so we'll really see what is needed then. Also, what did you do with the fuel leak detection pump? Are you still using your existing one or did you upgrade to the DMTL type? Are you familiar with all the wiring Stance Works did for you?

I got the engine and transmission in today with new header gaskets, engine mounts and transmission mounts, but we ran into a bit of a snag. We're having a clearance issue with the heater valves mounted on the firewall on the drivers side. I guess I need to mount it somewhere else and extend the heater hoses, but I was hoping to hear from you as to where they might have moved it to. I think that's the only thing physically holding us up right now, so the sooner we can figure it out, the better.

And this is where things get tricky! lol You HAVE to relocate it, on the driver side strut tower, like a 750il, lots and lots of custom fabrication, if you want everything looking right. Sorry i cant help with specifics, as we just fabricated things as we went. Also make SURE to CUT off the heater valves mount, you will need to have the engine sitting as far back as possible, for the trans mounts to bolt up right (i made that mistake and now have to move engine back).

So a 750il has it relocated to the drivers side strut tower as well?

Some updates on the Imola project;
Now sitting on BC coilovers thanks to Stance Factory!
Custom driveshaft was made
All front control arms replaced
Rear end is down, and everything getting replaced
Differential seals to be replaced
Fresh 750il calipers are in, waiting to be powdercoated
New larger 750il rotors are close, somewhere at UPS
Gas tank is going for rebuild next week

After all this, the driveline of the car will be pretty much brand new!!!

Oh, and one MORE S62 drivetrain is here and waiting for a suitable car to be dropped in!!!

Nice!

I finished mine about 6 weeks ago and have been doing the other stuff to bring the car back to a sporty feel.

Incredible. If you ever feel like selling...

Also, just my two cents, but I'd leave it on the 18" m-parallels...I've yet to see an E38 that looks better on anything else.

You should have kept the red E30 and swapped it into that
