I agree with euro style on this. M3 is a 3 series, M takes the car and modifies it doesn't make it a whole separate car.

I think the BMW website layout or some marketing ploy has him a little confused.

There are many ways I could answer. And Im thinking mainly about the M cars here.

I think the e36m is the sexiest/cleanest of the bunch. bar none. (e46m is rounded too much and too ricey imho)
Gotta love the s54 and s65 revving and power
and you have to love the e30m. Original, classic 80's.

I think as a basic 3 series car, they mostly improved themselves over the years in terms of ride and comfort. Though now one could argue they have gone too far with the new one and is gotten a little cheap.

Id think an e9x would make a great daily beater that blends the new comfort with a few tidbits of old still hiding under there. The newer the car, the better it typically rides overall. (not necessarily better overall handling, but they just deal with big bumps better in my experience)

I was merely pointing it out for those members of the forum who may not be aware. Was not trying to get all "technical". Just sharing knowledge

First off BMW, does not put them in the 3 series category. They are M series which is BMW Motorsport, which has its own division in Germany.

Second, It's pretty rude of you to insult my post with an inaccurate joke. Do some research before you decide to bash people.

although i respect your opinion, the e30 m3 is an e30, which is the designation for a model of 3 series. ditto for all other m3's.

Then you of all people should know that an M3 is built on the 3 series chassis regardless where it's assembled. We are talking chassis here not engines or trim packages (e30, e36, e46, e894 whatever number they are on now) and I hope you would agree the parts are mostly interchangeable.

I don't recall any of my responses saying they are not based on the 3 series chassis. I was merely stating that 3 series and M series are two different series. I made no mention of M series cars having completely different chassis.

M3 is both, M series and 3 series.

I'm not stating my opinion, that's the history of BMW whether anyone agrees or disagrees.

e30 is a chassis designation not a series. yes, the 3 series did use the chassis, and so did the M series for their M3.

I have to disagree with you here. Z1 is also E30 and Z3 is E36, I'm sure you would agree with me that those cars are part of the Z series.

Historically speaking, M cars became an M series sometime in 1999. Before 1999 all M cars were listed in the number series category. The separation is obviously for the marketing reasons.

also on BMW.com

Click history, highlights, automobiles and then "new 3 series"

BMW is inconsistent calling the M3 a "model" of the regular 3 series range its from, but does do this often.

wonderfully arrogant thing to say, particularly without any evidence.
