help 87 325i

Hey guys first post here. I'm looking at a 87 BMW 325i. it has 264,000 kilometers. There's a few things that I'm not to sure about. The check light for the anti lock breaks comes on but he claims that it stops once you press the break. The air conditioning doesn't work but heat does. We think the head gasket went but aren't 100 percent sure. The thermostat is open constantly. there is a bit of rust on the passenger side fender but its not to bad. Its a blast to drive. its a fairly clean car for what it is. The guy is asking $1800 for it and has a safety on it. New all season tires, really clean interior.

Great car for that price! All those things can be fixed easily. I say pull the trigger and buy it.

the anti lock brake issue is most commonly the relay under the dash or a a abs wheel sensor. easy fix. hard to tell if a headgasket is done. Unless there is coolant leaking externally visible or internally being used up. the other signs to look for does the temp gauge go into the 3/4 red area. severe back pressure into the overflow can also be an indication of head gasket problems. A coolant pressure test would show whether there is a coolant circulating issue.

as stated above most everything else is easy fix

Definitely a good buy. The thing with E30s is that as long as they aren't rusted, you can fix everything cheaply and easily.

For that price, if those are the only issues, and there isn't any significant rust that's "through" anywhere else, then its definitely worth picking up.
those issues are relatively cheap to fix. As for the head gasket...why aren't you sure if it's gone or not?

When you turn the car on, the "CHECK" in the gauge cluster will blink, and the brake light warning light in the roof panel will stay lit until you tap the brakes. This is normal.

There is also an amber ANTI-LOCK warning light on the bottom row of the cluster. If this is on after you start the engine, then the ABS isn't working. The E30 ABS is pretty simple (but effective), and easy to diagnose and repair.

If you like the car, go for it.
