Intermittent Climate Control Fixed!

Saturday I finally fixed my climate control that was dimming and then just going off randomly. I used the fix that is well written up in a few different places and involves just replacing a 0.47uF capacitor on the control board.

It worked perfectly I'm happy to say.

Since I was only able to buy a lot of 10 capacitors, not singles I have 9 spares if anyone else has this repair on their todo list.

PM me and we can figure out how to get one to you.

I fixed mine about a year or so ago and it worked like a charm until a couple weeks ago when it started to do it again :/

hmmm... well I actually have fourteen spares (I was too impatient for the mail so I went to an electronics shop and bought another pack). Let me know if you want one... even at a guaranteed failure every hundred thousand km or so I think I have enough to last more than my ownership of the car. ;-)

Hey Jamrobin,

I'm driving a 97 E36 318i, and I notice the same problem with my climate control during the past week with the super hot summer weather in Toronto this year.

Do you mind sharing the fix for the problem, my climate control would dim and turn on and off randomly, and it always won't start up when I start my car.

Thanks

this is the fix for the back-light turning on/off?

edit: i found the write-up, but most of them are for facelifted e36's. Would this be the same in a pre-facelifted e36 where the controls are knobs instead of electronic?

I also have one of those in my 318iS but I opened it for a different reason and it's not the same at all.

My M3 is the automatic climate control (buttons) and I was having the controls stop responding, the fan changing speed for no obvious reason, and sometimes refuse auto mode or just shut off out of the blue and come back on next time the car was started.

The repair was simple.
Not sure about the rule on posting a link outside of maXbimmer but here goes, these were the 2 best write ups I found... there are also YouTube videos but I like to print out the instructions 'cause it's easier to look at when I have tools in my hands.

Hope it helps. Let me know if you need a capacitor, I've 14 spares ;-)
