e30 hubs

Has even tried or has been successful in converting a 4 lug hub over to 5 lug?
Rather then trying to find an e30 M3 suspension (which is probably NEVER) or doing and e36. I'm thinking of getting e30 M3 hubs or equivalent and machining them down to the hub size for the 4 lug.

Can it be done?

Is the inside diameter for the bearing different and or could the bearing be swapped to make it fit?

Would be interested in feedback; would also appreciate knowledgeable feedback rather then opinion. I need to know whether it's been done and what is required.

You could get a sleeve made to fit over the existing spindle, but it would require a lot of planning, machining, making sure tolerances are correct, testing, etc. Not worth the effort. I saw on r3v some guy took this idea, but offers it as a complete package at near E30 M3 suspension prices. Meh.

If you own your own machine shop, sure... as a backyard DIYer, no.

I do have access to a machine shop-wouldn't cost me anything except materials..but is sounds like extensive work. thanks.

Yeah... E30 suspension sucks for us 4 bolt guys. Even if you did somehow manage to get a hub fixed to the strut, you're still fighting an uphill battle. You still need to make an adapter to fix the caliper in the right location (probably the easiest problem), also have to find a way to get the ABS sensor in the right spot too... and at the end of it, still don't have the ability to adjust roll center (unless you had a completely tubular race style control arm which wouldn't be streetable).

Wish it was as easy as the rear lol.

I recently found that out actually. :-) one needs the m3 rear bearings but I think the backing plates might be the same. unless, the m3 5 lug rotor is required for it to work? then I would think yes?

This guy on R3V has a kit that uses a sleeve on the spindle to adapt to an E36 or E46 front hub. The kit also supplier a bracket that adapts an E36 or E46 disk and caliper.

My concern with all of this is the sleeve and hub coming loose.

Yes, thanks for posting that link. So it's a trade off. you can get various thickness bolt on hubs to the existing strut but that will limit the rotor and brake size, unless you get the brake adapter kit.

the link off r3v. is cheaper then the hub set up but you then will need to get e36/46 brakes. I would imagine with the rear m3 hub and bearing you will also need the backing plate and adapters for the brake calipers?

I used standard bearings with the m3 hubs, they're the same as non-M, as long as we're talking e30 stuff all around. I think the backing plates may be larger but I don't know if they're really needed.

You might have to trim them for the slightly larger rear calipers if you don't have to for the slightly larger rear rotors, but I think they're different. I really should have compared everything to the stock 4 bolt stuff when I swapped.

Decent bump here, but if you're thinking about E30 M3 hubs, you may want to look into E87 rear hubs (P/N 33416760056 for Xref), as they're what the iX guys are using to go 5-lug as a lower offset, cheaper alternative to e30 m3 hubs. Only issue with them is that they're lower offset than e30 m3 hubs.

Heres what i found on BTCF


E30 325ix (front) 51mm
E30 325ix (rear) 81mm
E30 325i (rear) 65,5mm
E30 M3 (rear) 70mm
E87 1-sarja (rear) 60mm
E36 323ti compact (rear) 85mm

It's good to search bearing sizes from bmwfans.info, because they show the dimensions. If the bearing inner size is same, it usually tells you that it wears same splines. I guess those that i have listed from btcf have been used for 5 lug swap on rwd and awd models.
So the hub would be 5.5mm further inboard after the hub swap, or 10mm further I/B than e30 m3 hubs, but the price through turner is $101 vs $167 for e30 m3 hubs.

http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=129318 this guy says a lot more is involved, but I think it is because of his choice of brakes and not wanting to space the rotor away from the hub for whatever reason, even though it seems easier.

thanks for the info..yeah I can't imagine being to difficult to machine a couple spacers to bring the hub depth back to spec.
