E46 Engine Swap options

So one of our daily drivers, a 328i is pretty much done with its engine. Im debating whether to put in a new engine and use it as my daily over the summer and winter beater..

I want the 328i to stay auto - but I'm not sure what kind of engine is best in terms of cost and install...Ill probably have the install done at a shop but need to figure out..

1., Which engine to go for?
2. How much should I be looking to spend for the new engine and install and what else should I change eg cooling system etc to make sure we have everything covered.
3. Anyone have a ball park figure of how much labor will cost - for the install?>

I'd recommend a 330 engine. Have no clue about how much an install would go but the engine shouldnt be more than 2-2500.

Probably best to let the car go and get another E46. Just my 2 cents.

If you stayed 328 you are looking at around $3000-$4000 all in, motor, labor to remove and install and most additional parts that may need replacing like VCG, Belts, Coolant system stuff, oil housing gasket, fluids etc. A decent motor with average K's will be about $1750+/-.

I wouldn't personally bother going different on a beater, why wast etime and money to modify stuff for a beater?

I'm curious on the mileage and condition of your original engine. What has caused it to be on its last legs?

The easiest/ most straightforward swap would be another M52 from a 328 but you have to decide if the rest of the car makes a ~4k investment worth it.

There are plenty of E46's in half-decent condition selling for the sub 5k price range. If the body, interior, and suspension on yours are immaculate, then by all means proceed with a swap. Consider the risk of an unknown engine though, another vehicle which you can test drive and get a feel for (before spending money) is a different story.

We have low milage tested motors for about $1500...Higher K for about $1000
Most of our engines can be seen running before you decide to buy.

Thumbs up for Eurostyle, bought several motors from Phil and never a problem.

When I randomly asked a mechanic how much an engine swap costs, he said it is about 10 hours worth of labour +engine/parts cost. So that should give you an idea.
