Hey All! Input please.

Ok, I have been looking for a car forever now , not a car for a project but for a DD. I can't do any work on it right now so it needs to be running, I spend any free time on the e30 which takes forever as I am a year out from having open heart surgery, have 3 beautiful children and am trying to get a photography business together. I have looked all over, I want something fun, with power but it needs to seat 3 in the back, be manual and have little to no rust, I have looked at bmw, audi, mustangs, and no luck, I would love a 328is, just a fav of mine. we are planning a big trip this year so I need reliability and am hoping to find something with AWD but not a must have. I am asking for some help or suggestions on makes models or anything you may have seen. I am currently driving a 97 saab 9000cs turbo with approx. 170hp so I need whatever it is to have more power as its too tame, and after facing death a few times this year, hell I deserve something fun. Do not laugh but think of it as I do, a challenge, we have a total of $3000 to spend, please help. ty guys

I am thinking really hard, but can't come up with anything to be honest in that category. Maybe a VW. ?

Have you tried looking at some VW GTIs, VR6s? Perhaps turbocharged?
Some of those could put out a bit more than what you currently have.

Anyone else got other ideas?

I don't think you're going to get the car you describe for $3000, though.

328 is tight for the family.
540 is fast but maintenance can be expensive.

I would go with a 528...gotta find one though!

The only car I can think of is a 10-12 year old 5 speed Maxima. They are very reliable, quick for their time and OK on fuel.

528/530 is a good second choice, but the 540 and M5 are a lot of fun!

Seriously - if you have a 3k budget, there is little else out there. Maxima's are nice, but can you really compare to a 540???

At the risk of getting flamed, I don't agree with the opinion that 540's are a maintenance nightmare. I beat on my 540 for 4 years and it was rock solid. I am religious for maintenance though and I do the work myself to save some dough. If you can swing it.....E39 M5... but you might want to get that heart to 100% first

Lastly..... e39s fit 3 baby seats no problem...

My buddy is selling his blue 98 540-6 speed - we're in Markham. If you come all the way here, try my M5 too....not for sale though

ty guys

well it took a lot of searching and time but I found a great car, minimum rust, going to be repaired before winter m, mint interior and fast. We lucked out and got a 2001 saab 9-5 aero wagon, super fun and great for the family. If you get a chance try one out. It has 167000kms on it and flew through safety. hoping it stands the test of time. And hey windwagon if I get to your neighborhood I will take you up on that test drive! lol.

Nice one! Love to see pics, in and out and if you have a video/sound clip, that's even better.

I think your biggest challenge will be reliability and no attention. People don't sell cars that don't need any work for $3000. How is the Saab holding up?

Not necessarily true. I've seen some fairly nicely maintained Volvos in that price range. I just bought a 740 turbo (manual, rwd) as new winter beater this year for $1500 and all it really needs is a brake job, everything else on the car is in decent shape.

Hope it works out for you, although a brake job isn't exactly no work, in my experience there are always more hidden gremlins and the owner tried to unload it before the symptoms became more apparent. I was actually recently looking at 850s and V70s as a possible winter beater and gave up finding one that was both priced well and in good shape. One guy simply stopped replying to me when I asked if he could tell me about any issues that need addressing.
