Home made skid plate

I've had the stuff to do this skid plate kicking around for a couple years now. I finally got around to doing the fab. I copied the design that has mounts welded to the frame rails. I welded a piece of 1" x 3/8" flat bar to the front subframe and drilled and tapped into it to mount the rear of the plate. The hoop is made out of 1 1/2" x 3/16" square tube and is removable. The plate is a 12" wide piece of 3/16" thick stainless steel plate so I don't have to worry about it rusting if it scrapes on something. There's about 3/8"-1/2" clearance between the skid plate and oil pan.





I still need to make a cut out in the plate for doing oil changes.

While I had the car up I also pulled apart my coilovers and cleaned them up...



with all the work I've been doing on my car lately I'm definitely looking forward to getting it out for a nice drive on the spring cruise Sunday!

Looks awesome! Good work! How thick is the stainless plate you used?

Just saw it said 3/16"

I would rather break an oil pan than risk bending my frame rail.

It doesn't take much to break an oil pan, something as simple as a piece of debris on the road that's the right height will do it.

You'd really have to slam something pretty hard to bend or twist the frame....

There are a few guys selling these type of skid plates on r3v and I have heard of a couple horror stories of guys tweaking their frames.

The problem is that the lowest part of your car is now the frame, and just one misstep (hard kit) will cause alot more damage then an oil pan.

That being said if you can avoid hard slams I have seen this style skidplate take some serious abuse.

The lowest part of my car is actually still the headers by a pinch (the Bavauto headers sit pretty low) but obviously if I was slamming down onto something the front suspension would compress and the plate would hit first.

Links to horror stories? I'd like to read them.

You should have made the top base plate a bit wider, at least to the entire width of the frame rail. It is similar to the skidplate that Peerless sells on e30tech. The problem is the frame in that area of the car is the crush zone, and not made to take any upwards force... so naturally, when you hit something hard enough, it will just bend the bottom of the frame up. The Peerless version plate that I saw, it took a hard hit, but it compressed the frame so badly that it smashed into and destroyed the oil pan!

It's about as wide as the frame rail as is. I just left about a quarter inch on either side to leave room for welding.

I might add a couple of mini skid plates with a bent lip on the hoop on either side of the side plate on the off chance that I catch something that'd want to grab the hoop.

Id rather have this plate then have whatever you hit, smash through my pan then catch on the steering rack, ****ing up the subframe and bending the frame rails regardless.......
