Smoke..

Hi guys,

So the past week, I've noticed that when my car is idled for a while (drive thrus have since been my enemy ) I notice that a cloud of smoke (looks white to me. I don't think I see any blue in it) has been coming out of the exhaust pipe. Driving out, it lets out one more cloud, and then that's it. Nothing when I'm sitting at a traffic light, etc. As for smell, I don't smell anything "sweet", more like the smell most engines give off when you shut off the engine. I looked everywhere online, and those that experienced this problem said it can be valve stem seals, or a head gasket. I don't get any indicator lights going off, oil level is ok.

So along with searching online, unfortunately they said that these types of jobs are REALLY pricey, more because of how labour intensive it is. These were all from US websites, so I was wondering how much a job like this costs in Canada (i'm in the GTA). OR...is there anything else that can cause this?

Hope you guys can help. This was my father's car, and he passed last year, and I'd really like to keep it as long as I can.

It's a 2006 750Li (I know there have been alot of problems with this car, but this is the first problem I've heard with this car.)

most likely headgasket bud. Not too hard but time consuming.. Check your oil should look little like whitish or caramel like.

It is valve stem seals, common issue on the N62/TU, done lots. If the smoke is very recent then valve seal replacement will correct this issue. Valve seals only replacement is 2.5K+.

If the issue has been on going then you may need to pull the heads and replace the valve guides and clean out the secondary air ports on the head. Valve guide replacement is 6K+.

There have been a small amount of issues with the vent valves on the valve cover(s). They are cheap and easy to inspect and replace has they pop off of 4 clips on the valve cover.

Very, very common problem with the 04+ 545/550/745/750/X5's. See it all the time after idling for some time.
Different mechanics will tell you different things, I've done some reading on it and you can drive the car this way should you just want to run it into the ground, but repairs are costly and in many cases, the issue returns.

Thanks for the responses. I'd actually like to have the car for as long as I can. If I were to take it on a road trip (Toronto-NYC), do you think I would encounter problems along the way? Is it just an idling thing?

No immediate issues will occur, however over time it will damage the catalyst.

Yeah 6k is high, still lower than the dealer but you will never have the issue again the guides and seals are an improved design.

This 6k cost is overhauling both cylinder heads but for more $$$ you could go with the improved BMW castings.

Thanks so much for the information, Mark. I'm gonna have to make a call to see if the extended warranty covers it. It'll be a big relief if they do.
