It's just another form of Marketing and is somewhat effective. My brother-in-law is a doctor, owns a Mercedes, drives it like a baby and maintains it according to specs. When your buying private, you need to chat it up and gauge the person's maturity level (the way they speak, gestures, eye contact when answering tough questions etc). Just because it's a doctor or some other established professional doesn't meant they don't abuse their cars. Because it's private, chances are they have kept maintenance/repair bills, so ask to see them.
The major difference between a private sale and dealer sale is you have a place to "throw rocks" (in the metaphorical sense) at a dealership where as a private sale is caveat emptor big time.
