Cooling System Refresh - Recommendations

Im planning on doing a cooling system overhaul in a couple of months, was looking around and found this kit: http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-...oem-e46coolkit

Now, i have read a couple of conflicting posts with regards to which components to use when replacing your cooling system some argue aftermarket some say stock and it goes on. Then again if an OEM part failed and is prone to failure why replace it with the same part right? My only problem is I dont know which OEM components are good and which ones are not so good.

I would just like to hear from ppl who have already done an overhaul and what components to go with and why - what other components would you change? And what would be an estimate price of installation.

Breakdown of parts in the kit (copy pasted just for reference):
Water Pump

- Hepu - 11517527910

Upper Radiator Hose

- Rein OEM - 17127510952

Lower Radiator Hose

- Rein OEM - 11531436408

Antifreeze Concentrate

- Genuine BMW - 82141467704

Expansion Tank

If you are reasonably handy, this is not a difficult task. The trickiest part is getting the lower hose off and back on to the radiator. You simply do not have any wiggle room so patience and a wooden lever is key.

While you are in there, you should also do:
- A/C belt and tesnioner
- Main Belt, Tensioner, Idler pulley

Depending on production date, or dealer retrofit, you may have the mechanical belt tensioned or the updated hydraulic unit.

Make sure you get the right one if you are planning to do this on a Sunday or if you parts pusher is not next door.
As me how I know :-)

One great upgrade to consider is the EMP Stewart High Performance water pump. At $200 it is not cheap but the quality is there.

Just looked over you parts list. You need the crush washer for the drain plug in the Block.

I can't seem to get my hands on a picture or the part number now.

The drain plug sits just to the rear of the A/C compressor and removal is required to properly drain the block.

Thanks for the reply! I guess i might as well change the belts/tensioners while im at it. I read about the stewart pump - seems good, bit pricey though - will see.

What do you think of the OEM expansion tank ? Is there a better alternative?

At what mileage did you do your change?

im just reading up on different parts, as i get closer to the change will finalize the parts.

Expension Tank and Aux sensor go with BMW only! Behr is oem but make their oem parts in China... had both in position and although they looked identical, their colors differed slightly. the sensor is about $20 at bmw so no point in cutting corner there... water pump oem is saleri ... will last you another 200k no problem...

also you don't need to drain from the block, not really necessary because 90% of the coolant will come out from the bottom hose.

One thing is make sure you have the bottom drain plug oring as the old will leak once you put it back. and as stated... do the pulleys and hoses as well.

The cooling system is one of those hit or miss items... some guys experience failure at 160k and some drive to 250 on original components... best is to change it at around 200k if you plan on keeping it for another 50k+

I bought my April 2005 build 2005 330Cic last summer, and have about 75K kms on it. Should I be in a rush to do the cooling system refresh? How far do I need to go for preventative maintenance? Do I really need to replace the rad?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I did my '04 at 115 000 kms, mainly due to the thermostat failing. All other components were in top shape. I didn't change my radiator.

I would consider getting a expansion tank cap from an early E30, they are rated at lower pressure, so they would save the expansion tank. I will be getting one.
