91 M5 euro spec

Here is the autotrader link - http://www.autotrader.ca/a/BMW/M/MAR...howcpo=ShowCPO

Can anyone provide any additional insight on this vehicle. It's pretty rare so I'm assuming someone on here might recognize it. Also, I can't find much information about the vehicles built for the Japanese market - the only ones I've seen here were either French of German.

Based on what I've seen the price is pretty reasonable given there is a silver domestic market M5 of similar vintage for sale in the classifieds for 18K. That one is also in excellent shape.

I may not be up to date on E34 M5 market value and what not, but does that seem too good to be true or is it just me?

That is the mid-high range for an E34 M5. As a comparison I sold my '92 3.8L M5 (German import) in mint shape with around the same km for $18k in 2008.

It's a little low, but not completely out of line. Might have a SLS issue...

Overall though, I'd just say it's a good deal.

If you want one, though, go to Europe and import. I'm seeing a 1993 3.8L one in Paris next week for $9000, perfect condition at 150kms.

Thanks, folks. I found this car in the FS section. Seems its been up for awhile so it makes me nervous, although it did get a thumbs-ups from a fellow MaxBimmer forum member.

The market for "old" cars over $10k is limited, so it being for sale for a while means nothing. I'm not knocking the car, just saying that there is a limited market for cars such as these and it takes a while to find the right buyer, don't let that discourage you. If you are interested look at the car and have it checked out by a trusted shop, to see if you missed anything.

What are repair costs like for S38s these days? Is there anything major to worry about/look out for?

Good advice. I agree, the car is competing in a very niche market and it's not unlikely it would take some time to find a buyer for such a unique vehicle at that price. I'll keep it under consideration in my search, and won't rule it out until I personally examine it.

Costs are quite high in general due to limited production and hard-to-find parts; biggest problem is definitely the Nikasil cylinder lining fiasco, don't buy one that hasn't had this addressed. It was covered by a recall in the 90s, so should have been done. The self-leveling suspension is also a big issue you want to check out, but that has nothing to do with the engine.

If I was looking, I would probably have bought it if it checks out.
As mentioned, cars like these (and in general) can take a little while to find the right buyer, doesn't necessarily mean the car has issues.
