Over heating - HELP!

had my car sitting for the past 6 months. I went to start it up just now and it idled for a bit warming up and then straight to over heating.

I turned it off and let it sit for about 15 mins - opened the coolant to see if there was any and it began to overflow. quickly closed it. waited another 20 mins. started it agian. idled for a bit and began to overheat again

Thoughts on whats up?

any DIY way to check/fix this crap now?

Probably air in the system. Do a search on bleeding the coolant on an e36.

Could be air in the system... I'd say change the thermostat.
