wicked. COATED!!!! And no mid section!! I need to run a cat
And what about shipping? what if the ontario guys all just picked theirs up in Guelph? I know I get down that way once a month. Hell I was at the manor last week!
Combined shipping must be a little better.

LOL how backwards did I get that... I changed it.
I need to run a cat too, but I figured it'd be nice to have the mid-section if I ever wanted to used the headers on a track car, it's only $50 more. It's up to you though.
Yeah we can have all the Ontario stuff shipped together to save a little. We just need a few more local guys to buy some sets!

I answered that on the last page. Some more detail on the company and the process...
Tubular said the place that's doing the coating has been doing coatings for 20 years. The coating that is used on the cone of the space shuttle was developed by the guy who's running the shop. With specific regard to the headers, the process is as follows:
1. Chemical dipped to clean them
2. Blasted to remove any scale or other debris that the dip did not remove
3. Coated inside and out
4. Baked
5. Blasted with softer media (i.e. walnut shell)
6. Second coating on outside
7. Baked
8. Polished in a bead tumbler

Ok, I called Tubular at lunch just now to get an update.
With regards to the material the price, it has gone up slightly, but it’s only going to increase the price per set ~$3 (and that's just straight up material cost, Tubular isn't charging a mark up on the price increase of the material). However when I spoke to them last week, at that time there were about 10 people interested, and that’s what I told them. When they got material pricing they got it for 20 sets worth to get that pricing. So after talking to Tubular this group buy is going to be capped at 20 sets to make things easier for both me and them.
There also needs to be some clarification with regards to the mid-section. The basic mid-section is just 2” tubing with a slip fit on both ends. Tubular said that Bavauto use to send them the two bolt flanges that bolt up to the stock cat back exhaust for the customers that wanted to be able to be able to bolt up to their stock exhaust. For anyone who wants that capability there will be an added cost because they said they’d have to go source the flanges from somewhere. They did say however that for no cost they can drop it down from 2” to an 1 ¾” so that if you want to use your stock exhaust you can just slide the mid-section in to the cat back and use exhaust clamps. So when it comes time for ordering I will be clarifying with each one of you via PM how you’d like the mid-section to terminate.
That being said Tubular and myself are currently sorting out the details of making the initial payment to get the work started (there are a couple extra hoops to jump through since the company’s bank is in the US and my bank and I are in Canada). Once the details are sorted out I’ll contact each of you about deposits and getting your shipping information so Tubular can estimate what it will cost each of you for shipping.
Once Tubular has the money, they said that the lead time on the material is two weeks and that it would take them about two weeks to make all the sets. They also said that they couldn’t comment on what the lead time from the coater would be until they actually send the parts there because it all depends on how busy the coater is at the time. I’d say that right now late August / early September seems like a realistic shipment date
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to PM me.
Cheers.
The list is now capped at 20:
1) Bullet Ride 325, mid-section included, coated, 1 set.
2) Gary Horneck 325, mid section included, uncoated, 1 set (R3V)
3) tinkerputzer, 325, midsection included, coated, 1 set (R3V)

hmm how much would a stock 325i benefit from one of these... I do plan on getting a MarkD 91 very soon so I'm sure it'd make the headers work better. What are the claimed hp increases?

Bavauto never gave an official "claimed" hp increase for these headers. And I had a hard time finding any information on the net. One of the guys at Bavauto told me that a former employee had installed the headers and mid-section and the car felt noticeably quicker with the butt dyno. He figured it was probably 15whp. I also saw a discussion on a forum between some E28 guys (here http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?p=404340) that said the following...
Quote:
|
To possibly add something substantive to this conversation, I took part in a dyno day many years back with several e28s. The Jim Conforti chipped stock exhaust e 28 535s that were running well put down about 150-155rwhp. My car (88 535i 5/87 build) and another had almost identical mods, with JimC chips and he had a Stahl and I had (still have) a Bavauto header. We both had hp numbers in the low/ mid170s, with torque figures approaching 200. There was only 2-3hp diff between our two cars, and about 20+ separating the non-headered cars. That number is also corraborated by the butt dyno, which says about the same.

Even if it's only 10whp... the sound an M20 will make with headers is Godly

I wouldn't mind a nicer sound as I want to continue using my stock exhaust so perhaps the headers/mid section would make it sound nicer without sacrificing my exhaust. I hope MarkD replies my email soon as I'd love to just go grab a chip from him. I will think very hard about this as I just ordered a grand worth of suspension parts and have budgeted for a chip. Another $590 would really be stretching it but damn they are so pretty and I do want a slightly sportier sound. Sorry if I missed it but is there a deadline? or is the deadline when the 20 spots are filled.

There's no deadline, but it's first come first serve, so when the 20 spots are filled you're out of luck.
