Free Website Hosting/Domain name

I need to create a simple website and register a domain.
Is there anywhere that would host the site for free? If not, what are some cheap alternatives and where do I buy a domain name? ie. whatiwant.ca?

if your computer savvy enough you can host it on your own and just register the domain name... otherwise just go with a domain host like godaddy or something.

It's actually cheaper sometimes to have the domain and web site hosted from the same place.

000webhost is pretty reliable (free hosting). domain names cost about 3$ each (not from 000webhost, i think network solutions was cheapest last time i checked)

If it's for a year or less, if this still works, use dreamhost with code MAX97. Gives you 97% off a year's worth of hosting and domain registration (after that it's their regular rate), I don't remember how much but it was dirt cheap. Back when I cared to have a host I'd just get a new domain each year and move my stuff before it expired.

You can get a book if you are not savy with working on your page. I think I have one from the university. I wanna work on a webpage for my bikeshop, but I just wanna mess around with a free webpage for now.

use wordpress or another CMS if you're lazy.

This. There is a ton of templates out there for even the most basic site, and with a little fooling around you can get something setup really quickly for $0.

It depends on what type of website you are setting up, and what you want to do with it. Free web-hosting is usually limited to space.

What is the purpose of the website? A Company website? Photo blog?

Blogger is a decent free service from google with no space restrictions, I've seen it used for non-blog type purposes such as a simple company website, you are limited to what you can do with their interface, but can be customized with various templates that they offer or you can buy a customized one from a third party. You get a free sub-domain (XXXXX.blogspot.com) or you can also buy your own domain and pay yearly for it, usually it's about ~$10/yr which is nothing.

There are a few others such as http://wordpress.com/ that are similar but have slightly different features.

^^you want a TLD (.com, .ca, etc) for a buisness to rank better. You will need to do some SEO to rank on the first page. If its a competitive keyword (like HID kit) you'll need lots of high PR backlinks and unique content to rank well. Check out blackhatseo forum
