E36 Starter
Does anyone know where I can buy a starter for a 98 328i?
I need to get mine replaced, and I'm wondering if its cheaper to buy one (online or somewhere) and take it in to shop to be installed.
Or, just pay for the part and install at the shop?
Any ideas?
Thank you

umm, starter is NOT a diy for the non experienced. It takes some finnese. If you are a hobby mechanic or intermediate like me, then I would attempt it.

No one knows anywhere else to get a starter replacement except for RMP?? There's gotta be somewhere else that's trustworthy.

400 installed is a steal, it's a terrible job.
recently had my clutch redone, replaced starter while i was at it, mechanic told me the starter was by far the hardest part of the entire job (good thing i changed it, too, the old one was pretty nasty & probably wouldn't have held up much longer!)

Look around for a shop that rebuids alternators as most will also rebuild starters since well really it's nothing more then a simple electric motor.
Here in Ottawa I got a new OEM new for 235.00 while handing them my old one ( takes away core charge). Had they not had one on the shelf already I would have had to wait a day for them to rebuild my old one which would have been a lot cheaper even still.
And it is a real PITA to change yourself. Can be done from up top if you remove the entire intake manifold, another way is drop the drive shaft and let the tranny hang down will give you the clearance to remove it but your blind for removing and and installing the wires.
If a 318 you can finess it under the PS pump if your patient enough to sneak it through everything in the way.
